We will discuss The Country of Pointed Firs by Sarah One Jewett. Published in 1896, this book can be read as a study of the effects of isolation and hardship on the inhabitants of the decaying fishing villages along the Maine coast. Willa Cather considered it to be one of three novels most likely to achieve a permanent place in the canon of American literature. It is in the public domain and can be downloaded for free.
